Ebony WOOD Pen Blanks

Origin:
Ceylon Ebony is primarily found in Southeast Asia and is widely valued for its deep color, strength, and premium appearance.

Color / Appearance:
The heartwood is jet black, sometimes featuring subtle grey or dark brown streaks. The pale yellow sapwood is clearly distinguished from the heartwood. The finest-quality ebony is uniformly black and often resembles polished black plastic due to its smooth, dense structure.

Grain / Texture:
Ceylon Ebony has a medium texture with small pores. The grain is typically straight to narrowly interlocked, contributing to both its strength and visual appeal.

End Grain Characteristics:
Diffuse-porous structure with medium to large pores arranged irregularly. Pores occur singly and occasionally in radial multiples of 2–3. Heartwood deposits may sometimes be present. Rays are narrow and not easily visible without magnification. Parenchyma patterns include banded, vasicentric, lozenge-shaped, winged, and confluent formations.

Rot Resistance:
Highly durable and naturally resistant to decay and termite attack, making it suitable for long-lasting applications.

Workability:
Due to its high density and interlocked grain, Ebony can be challenging to machine and may dull cutting tools more quickly. Occasional chalky mineral deposits may also affect tooling performance. However, it glues and finishes well. During finishing, natural resins may cause slight color bleed, so proper sealing before finishing is recommended.

Odor:
Produces a mild rose-like scent during machining, though some users find it less pleasant compared to other rosewoods.

Allergies / Toxicity:
Severe reactions are uncommon, but wood dust may act as a sensitizer. The most typical reaction reported is minor skin irritation. Standard protective measures during machining are recommended.
